KC Winter Activities for the Family

With the holidays behind us and the days feeling colder and colder, it can be frustrating trying to find activites that will get the family out of the house and having fun. Luckily, Kansas City offers a variety of active, educational, and delicious alternatives to staying at home. Here are some of our CTC picks to check out with your family this season:

Make ice skating a family tradition! The Crown Center Ice Terrace is open until March 13th, so even though the holidays are over, there’s still time to celebrate the winter season with this time-honored activity. Visit during the daytime or at night when the rink is lit up with winter lights. After practicing your best spins, it’s a quick drive to Christopher Elbow, where the family can indulge in some of the best hot chocolate Kansas City has to offer.

If the family is up for an adventure, try indoor skydiving at iFLY’s brand-new location in Overland Park. Instructors prepare courageous adults and children over the age of three with flight training instruction, then it’s off to skydive in an indoor vertical wind tunnel. Be sure to request a video of your flight session so you can remember your once-in-a-lifetime experience with the family for years to come!

Whether your child is obsessed with Star Wars, studies astronomy, or is just beginning to learn the names of the planets, space enthusiasts of all ages will be in awe of Stargaze Kansas City at Union Station. The Planetarium’s 60 foot dome theater and 3D simulator will take you on a comprehensive tour of the winter night sky. Best of all, tickets for Stargaze tours are only $6 or free if you’re a Union Station member.

Celebrate spring as soon as possible at Shoal Creek’s Kid’s Spring Jamboree on March 19th. Every year, hundreds of families gather on the 80 acres at Shoal Creek’s Living History Museum to enjoy the outdoors, field games, and arts and crafts. The event is free admission and BYOB – bring your own basket for the Easter Egg hunt!
