They’ve provided us with a list of the latest tips and tricks to protect your computer from viruses and hackers, and we want to share them with you! - Install an up to date antivirus program. A lot of these are free! Try out Avast, AVG, or Sophos.
- Install an anti-malware software program such as Malwarebytes (also free!).
- Make sure you have a physical firewall protecting your home PC from the Internet, such as Linksys, Dlink, or Netgear
- Use a DNS protection software package to protect you from accessing malicious websites on the Internet. OpenDNS Home is free!
- Use a secure password management encrypted software program such as Keepass (free!) to help secure your personal user id/passwords.
- Regularly apply security updates to Microsoft Windows and third party installed software. Try using Ninite.com or Windows Updates.
- Always backup your important data and pictures.
- Always power off your home PC when not being used.
- If you have home WiFi, change your WiFi password regularly at least quarterly and make sure the password is long and complex.
- Enable two step verification on all web based email accounts.
